Amy Lynn Calder (née McLean), 37, of Traverse City, died peacefully in her home with her family at the bedside on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015. She bravely faced her battle with cancer with courage and her end of life with dignity. Amy was born on June 27, 1978 in Royal Oak, to Jane (Whale) Wroubel and Robert McLean.

She attended Birmingham Schools and was a 1996 graduate of Seaholm High School. Amy then attended Michigan State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in family and community services with an emphasis on early childhood health. There she met the love of her life, Mac Calder, although she did not know it until after college when their friendship blossomed into love.

After college Amy worked as a child life specialist at Children’s Hospital in Detroit and then became a massage therapist before taking a break to be a mom. Mac and Amy moved from downstate to Traverse City in 2008 to start their family. Motherhood came naturally to Amy and she raised three happy boys with ease, grace and love.

Amy was a cheerful romantic, a loving mother and a compassionate friend. She was a world traveler and sought out adventures both near and far. She took advantage of hammocks and dance floors and woodsy trails and loved whipping up creative meals in the kitchen for her family and friends. Her birthday cakes were legendary.

Amy’s personality was evident in her distinct style, and she looked upon the world with a creative insight and appreciation. She believed music to be the most pure form of modern art, enjoying live music in the sun, freely dancing any chance she got and singing with her boys in the car.

Amy built upon her experiences in the past and was keenly mindful of the future but lived mostly in the present, joyfully savoring each passing moment in her life’s journey. She lived every day to its fullest with a smile beneath her nose and a twinkle in her eye.

Amy is survived by her loving husband, Mac; her three beautiful boys, Griffin (6), Fletcher (3) and Ewan (1); her parents, Jane (Whale), Leo Wroubel and Robert McLean; her sister, Elizabeth (Randall); nephew, Max; niece, Macey; her in-laws, David and Beth Calder; her brother-in-law, Dan (Sally); and nephews, Nolan and Quinn.

She was preceded in death by her sweet dog, Paddington (1998 - 2013).

Amy made the world beautiful, filling it with laughter and happiness, and we will miss her dearly.

Her legacy will live on through the memories of her family and friends and especially through her sweet boys, Griffin, Fletcher and Ewan. Mac will be sure to cultivate their mother’s love in their children as they carry on Amy’s gentle outlook of the world.

An informal reception will be held at Mac and Amy’s home from 1 to 5 p.m., with a celebration of her life from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 with food and drinks to follow.

In lieu of flowers, Amy would want you to enjoy a peaceful walk in the woods to enjoy nature, to hug your child really tightly or even to dance at the next opportunity, just like she loved to do. Her death is so profoundly sad, and yet so beautiful.
