Bertha May Powell, 90 of Elk Rapids, died, Wednesday, February 13, 2019. She was born on December 21, 1928 in Williamsburg the daughter of James Albert and Martha Macy (Samuels) Stites. She married Leon Powell on January 31, 1948.

She loved music, playing the piano and organ, crossword puzzles, watching Lawrence Welk and the Golden Girls. Bertha was really good at Scrabble and liked Country Western Dancing. She was known for being able to recite every state and capital in that state. She loved her knickknacks and ceramics. She volunteered at the Elk Rapids Golf Course. She looked forward to taking her Sunday rides. Bertha loved being with her family.

Bertha is survived by her children, Lana (Don) Courtade, Pat (Bruce) Chappel and Cathy (Dan) Hansel; brother, Wayne (Caryl) Stites; brother-in-law, Jim and his wife, Phyllis Powell; 3 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon Powell; son, Timothy Powell; a grandson and 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
