Life Story / Obituary
Darla Jean Raney passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and cherished memories.
Born on July 18, 1940, in Lima, Ohio, Darla later made her home in Traverse City, where she built her life and formed lasting connections within her community. She was known for her compassionate heart, her strength, and her ability to make those around her feel truly valued.
Darla was a talented and dedicated artist throughout her life. She previously owned the shops County Coterie and Evergreen Gallery, where she shared her creativity with others. For many years, she painted beautiful designs on woodwork lovingly crafted by her husband, Chuck. Later, she discovered a passion for watercolor painting, where her natural talent continued to shine.
In her later years, Darla found great joy in quilting, creating stunning pieces for family and friends. Her handmade quilts—especially her cherished Christmas tree skirts and stockings—will remain treasured keepsakes, offering comfort and lasting reminders of her warmth, care, and artistic spirit.
Darla also had a deep love for the water and for adventure. For many years, she enjoyed sailing on Grand Traverse Bay with her husband, Chuck, especially treasuring trips to Power Island and the special moments when her grandchildren could join them. In later years, she and Chuck shared a love of travel, exploring Europe, Alaska, and many destinations across the United States in their motorhome.
Darla is lovingly remembered by her husband, Chuck; her daughters, Lynda (Dana), Vicki, Connie (Mark), and Heather (Mark). She was a proud grandmother to David (Muriah), Jen (Cody), Andy (Heather), Adam (Tasha), Drew (Whitney), Ryan (Jessica), Makenzi (Chad), Cassidy, and Matt (Haley), and a cherished great-grandmother to Skyy, Jaslyn, Rex, Nevaeh, Riley, Drew, Aurora, Elliott, Diana, Addy, Ona, and Grayson. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom she meant so very much and whose lives she filled with love, warmth, and lasting memories. Her grandchildren will especially feel her presence each Christmas through the many ornaments she lovingly gave over the years, a tradition that will continue to bring comfort and connection.
She was preceded in death by her son, David; her parents, Evelyn and Cary; her siblings, Tom, Zerlene and Jim; and many family members and friends.
Darla will be remembered for the love she shared, the beauty she created, and the lasting impressions she made on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.
