Life Story / Obituary

David Lee Bivins, 70, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home. He was born on October 11, 1947 in Detroit, the son of James Leon Bivins and Margaret Leversa Rathbun.

Author, poet, beloved friend, father, grandfather, avid reader and football enthusiast. These are a few words that describe David Bivins (Mr. Dave).

David grew up in Detroit with a deep love for playing baseball and football. He was a tried and true Lions fan. He often shared stories of his days riding his motorcycle around Detroit and working as the produce manager in the neighborhood supermarket.

After moving to Northern Michigan, David spent many years fostering and caring for children, a selfless calling that he had. He loved playing football with them, educating them, and reading to them. He loved to share his passion for books with others, and rarely missed an evening of reading except to babysit his beloved ‘grand kiddos,’ whom adored him and looked up to him as a Grandpa. He loved enjoying the peaceful outdoors and caring for his dogs. David was a kind person with a huge heart and he will forever be missed.

David is survived by his companion and best friend, Carole Bull; his golden doodle dog, Maggie Mae; children, Pamela Straubel, Timothy Bivins, Joshua Bivins, Katrina Tucker, April Bivins, Terri Cieslik and Mysty Ammons; grandchildren; and brother, Michael Bivins.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Private services will be held. Please visit www.lifestorytc.com to sign the guestbook and share your thoughts with the family. Those who wish, may make contributions to the Cherryland Humane Society.
