Derek McCombs, age 44 of Traverse City, died on March 24, 2019. He was the 2nd son of Philip Bruce McCombs and Karon Lee (McCoy) McCombs.

Derek graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1992 and went on to study business at NMC. He played baseball as a child and in high school, earning him the nickname “Lefty.” He enjoyed fishing and boating, loved barbeques with family and friends, and was an avid U of M sports fan.

Derek had a heart of gold. He made friends wherever he went and was loved by everyone.

Derek is survived by his children, Sydney McCombs, Alexis McCombs, and step-son, Grant Thompson; parents, Karon McCombs and Philip (Lois) McCombs; siblings, Andrew (Jamie) McCombs and Jason (Peggy Roach) McCombs; nieces, Sarah McCombs and Oona McCombs; nephew, Nicholas McCombs; stepbrothers, David Alexander, William Alexander, and Seth Alexander.

Memorial contributions may be made to his brother, Andrew McCombs, for an educational fund for Sydney and Alexis. An informal gathering will be held 2:00 – 4:00pm on his birthday, Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City.
