Irwin (Irv) Burr Stoner, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2019 at the Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.

He was born in Owosso Michigan to Burr and Catherine (Nelson) Stoner on March 10, 1929. His childhood years were happily spent in Owosso. Some of his fondest memories were visits to his grandparent’s dairy farm with his cousins.

He spent his High School years at Principia in St. Louis Missouri, and graduated in 1947. He was captain of the football and soccer teams.

Following High School he attended his beloved Michigan State University. His years at Michigan State included playing football and boxing and he developed lifelong friendships from his Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science (BS).

Irv and his wife, Marcia moved to Traverse City in 1980. He owned and operated Modern Cleaners in Traverse City and was active buying and selling commercial real estate. He enjoyed adventures and completed several “bucket list” experiences including skydiving and a white-water raft trip with his son during his life. His zest for life in Traverse City was unparalleled. He loved flying, fishing, sailing, swimming and golfing. In the fall there was hunting with family and friends. Irv was a long time season ticket holder attending Michigan State football home games or coaching/watching away games. In the winter Irv loved skiing, and ice boating. He always loved traveling with his wife, Marcia, in any season.

His is preceded in death by his sister Virginia, his first wife Nancy, his daughter Linda, as well as his parents.

Irv was a loving and devoted father and grandfather to his children and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Marcia,; sons Kurt (Lisa R Stoner), Mark Stoner daughter LisaK Stoner, grandchildren Jamie and Aaron, great grandchildren, and his step children, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat grandchildren.

Donations in Irv’s memory can be made to the Dennos Museum in Traverse City, 1410 College Dr, Traverse City, MI 49686, Hospice House in Traverse City, 450 Brook St, Traverse City, or Forest Animal Rescue in Silver Springs, Florida.

Irwin’s son Kurt and his wife Lisa R Stoner have been operating Forest Animal Rescue, an animal sanctuary which is internationally recognized, fully accredited and licensed and is 501 C non-profit specializing in tigers, bears and other large cats. The sanctuary is entirely supported through tax-deductible donations.
