Life Story / Obituary
Kathryn Irrer Wilson
1952-2024
Kathy Wilson- talented jeweler, supermom, grandma, sister, and loyal friend- passed away at home on August 21, surrounded by family. In the days leading up to her passing, she spent precious time with her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, siblings, friends and neighbors. When she was first diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, Kathy told friends she would face the challenge with humor and courage. That’s just what she did- showing all who knew her the depth of her strength and grace.
Kathy grew up on a mint farm in St. Johns, MI, one of six siblings. She was always a high achiever, from winning a county-wide speech contest in tenth grade to being named Valedictorian of the Class of 1971 at St. Johns High School. Kathy went on to study journalism at the University of Michigan, where she earned her degree in three years.
At U of M, Kathy took a single class in metalsmithing and began making jewelry on a card table with a torch she bought at the hardware store. She sold her first pieces at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market, and her talent was evident. She quickly excelled and went on to become an accomplished craftswoman in the world of fine jewelry, winning countless awards at juried art fairs in Michigan and Florida. Her passion for the art of jewelry making was apparent in every piece she created, each one a testament to her attention to detail and creative vision. Kathy’s work has not only graced countless special occasions but continues to touch the lives of the many who own her jewelry.
Kathy’s business as a jeweler continued to thrive after the birth of her two daughters, Lauren and Jesse, but she always had time to help in their classrooms, sharing her artistic talents by painting backdrops for plays and helping with art projects. She was also an animal-lover, adopting several dogs and cats from the classified ads when her children were young.
In 2011, Kathy opened On the Rocks, in downtown Traverse City; the store features Kathy’s one-of-a-kind jewelry designs with Michigan stones, and has become a beloved staple in the area. Around the same time, Kathy welcomed Sloopy, a Wheaten terrier/poodle, into her life. Sloopy became her close companion and hiking buddy. Their cosmic bond was undeniable: Sloopy became ill just a few weeks before Kathy’s passing, and was put to rest.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Alberta and Norman Irrer. She is survived by her sister Jean and brothers Tom, Dick, Jim, and Joe. She is also survived by her former husband Gary Wilson and their daughters Lauren and Jesse, and her sons-in-law Alex and Spencer. Finally, she is survived by her six grandchildren, each of whom brought her so much joy. They will deeply miss “Grandma Kathy.”
Kathy had friends all over the country, but her Michigan pals, especially, will remember her as a steadfast and humble person. Kathy’s light will continue to shine in the countless pieces she crafted, each bringing joy to the many who wear them. Her enduring legacy is etched both in her body of work and in the hearts of those close to her.
A celebration of Kathy’s life is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Sleder’s Family Tavern. A light luncheon will be served. The family prefers that any contributions be made to Grand Traverse Land Conservancy, Leelanau Conservancy, or Hospice of Michigan. They also thank Life Story Funeral Home for their help and guidance at this difficult time.
