Melvin Walter Basch, 75, of Traverse City, Michigan, went peacefully home to be with the Lord on February 22 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 2, 1948, in Traverse City, Michigan, to Milton and Mildred (Riss) Basch.

Mel spent his career serving the United States Post Office in various roles. He was a graduate of Glen Lake High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, a place he held dear to his heart.

A faithful follower of Christ, Mel primarily attended Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City. Mel cherished spending time with his wife, Linda, his children Brian (Jenny), Melissa (Chris Smith), and his grandkids. He enjoyed hunting, sports of all kinds - especially cheering on the Spartans, and was active in weekly community Bible study and church activities. He also had a special love and care for the elderly.

Mel is survived by his wife, Linda, his children Brian and Jenny of Holt, Michigan, Melissa and Chris Smith of Greenville, South Carolina, and his grandchildren Trevor, Taylor, and Molly Basch, and Oliver, Judah, and Margaret Smith. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Milton and Mildred Basch, his brother Myron Basch, and his granddaughter Norah Smith.

A celebration of life for Mel will take place on July 20, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City, a visitation at 11:00 am and a luncheon to follow the service. Guests who wish may wear green to recognize Mel’s favorite, team, MSU.
