Norma Jean (Egeler) Marmie, 90, of Traverse City, died on Saturday, January 6, 2024. She was born on November 13, 1933, in Empire, Michigan, and raised on South Manitou Island. She is the daughter of Harold Tobin and Shirley Loretta (Denny) Tobin.

She graduated from Empire High School. Norma worked as an LPN at the original Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital on Bay St. and at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City. She served as a cook for Leelanau Schools for 21 years.

Her interests included gardening, watching wildlife, cooking, and she loved kids, where she frequently volunteered at the Trinity Lutheran Day Care Center. Norma took immense pride in her cooking and baking skills. Her Cherry pie earned her 1st place, and she was also honored as the Cherry Queen runner-up for the National Cherry Festival. While living in Empire, she loved to go to Empire Beach and watch the beautiful sunsets.

Norma loved people. She was dedicated to family and took care of her aging mother; sister, and her brother as their health declined.

Norma is survived by husband, David Marmie; they were married in Leland in 2003; children, Shelly T. Brown, Martin C. Egeler, Rudy M. Egeler, Ken P. Egeler, Penny L. (Steve) Abend, Timothy J. Egeler, Donald J. (Karen) Egeler, Tracy P. (Lynn Herman) Egeler, Brian J. Egeler; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and her lifelong friend, Connie Milliron.

She is preceded in death by her parents; 1st husband, Martin “Beaner” Egeler; brothers, John and Donald Tobin; sister, Loretta Tobin; son-in-law, Tim Brown, daughter-in-law, Koren K. Gokey-Egeler and sister-in-law, Dottie Tobin.

Norma was devoted to her faith and her family. She will be greatly missed.

Memorial Contributions may be made to a local charity of one's choice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 am, Friday, January 12, 2024 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Empire. Visitation will start at 10:00 am. Private burial will take place at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Empire in the spring.
