Robert E. (Bob) Doughty, age 91, died on April 10, 2022. Bob was born on May 10, 1930 in Columbus, MS, to Annie Lee (Adair) and Roy Doughty. He grew up attending public schools in several states. After high school Bob attended Mississippi State University for two years before marrying Jean Weeks in 1950. In 1954 he moved with his family to Detroit, MI for work as a journeyman electrician. Bob went on to attend Wayne State University, graduating with honors in 1966 with a BS in electrical engineering while working for Chrysler Corporation. Bob’s first wife, Jean Weeks Doughty, died and Bob married the Reverend Nancy Wynkoop in 1966.

Bob loved the Great Lakes and spent summers sailing on his boat with his family and friends. He had an affinity for the outdoors including camping, golfing, and photographing nature. He was the consummate do-it-yourselfer, always involved in a home project.

Bob retired as an engineering manager from Chrysler in 1992 and moved to Traverse City with his wife, Nancy, in 1998. After he retired he and Nancy enjoyed many years of traveling and sailing. Bob spent a significant amount of time volunteering with the American Youth Hostels in Detroit, the Music House Museum in Acme, TART trail activity in Traverse City, and leadership positions in co-op and condominium housing communities in which he lived. In retirement he also became skilled at building detailed models of ships, lighthouses, and antique airplanes.

Bob was a pillar of strength and stability. He was known for his determination (some might call it stubbornness), generosity, frankness, practicality, love of learning and knowing, thoughtfulness,

and dry sense of humor.

Bob had a strong commitment to family and loved spending time with them. Bob and Nancy celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in 2021. He and his wife were each other’s best friends, supporters, and loved each other deeply.

Bob is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters Angela Doughty, Suzanne Doughty, Ayliah Doughty, and Anne (Brian) Kelly; 4 grandchildren, Robin van Eck, Tim Lunn, Luke Kelly, and Zak Kelly; and great granddaughter, Julianne van Eck.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Annie Lee Doughty, his first wife, Jean Weeks Doughty, and daughter, Carol Doughty.

A celebration of life for Bob will be held 2 pm, Saturday, May 14th at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, 6726 Center Rd, Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse Endowment Fund or the Inland Seas Education Association, Suttons Bay, MI.
