Life Story / Obituary
Alfred “Ted” Charles Roney, 80, of Traverse City, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at the Munson Hospital Hospice House.
Ted was born February 6, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Alfred and Genevieve (Sistek) Roney. Ted graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1955. After graduation, he married and then, enlisted in the Air Force where he served for 4 years.
Ted moved to Traverse City with his wife and children in 1973. He attended NMC, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Electronics.
As a teen, Ted was a caddy at area golf courses and country clubs in the Pittsburgh area. He learned many skills through that job, and became an avid golfer himself. Ted was golfing 18 holes almost daily just weeks before his death. Ted always used to tell how the “younger guys” on the course were amazed at how far he could hit a ball.
Ted loved technology, especially computers. Ted enjoyed creating and editing photos. Often, with the intention of making family laugh. He had a wicked sense of humor and found joy in being silly. Especially, if he had someone being silly right back. Ted, also, had a great passion for music, especially jazz.
On Sundays during football season, Ted could be heard yelling at the TV, cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ted is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carol Jean (Bounting) Roney. Children, Lee Ann Metcalf of Nashville, TN, Alfred Jr. “Ted” (Vickie) Roney of Kingsley and Dean William Roney of Traverse City; Step-children, James Gainforth, Jay (Sue) Gainforth and Julie Gainforth; Grandchildren, Chris McPherson, Misty Regalado, Aeron Cabinaw , Brandon Gainforth and Anna Gainforth; several Great-Grandchildren; A sister, Eleanor Bigenho of Roseville and his former wife, Marlene Detour of Traverse City.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents.
