Life Story / Obituary

Print

Barbara June Sisco (Hames), 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, at the Masonic Pathways, in Alma, Michigan on March 2, 2023.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years Ken, also of Alma, and three sons- Keith (Laurel) of Lapeer, Curtis of Mesick, and Douglas (Aimee), of Grandville.

She was preceded in death by her parents James and Saphrona Hames, and 6 brothers and sisters. Born in Melbourne, Arkansas she graduated from high school in Oxford, Arkansas, and was proud of being captain of the women’s basketball team. The family moved to Detroit shortly after, where she met Ken, and were married in 1953.

Eventually moving to the Lansing area, Barbara found work on the campus of Michigan State University, and retired as the Executive Assistant to the Dean of the College of Human Ecology.

Barb loved her 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, and she was loved by all. She truly loved visits with family, and a family reunion one year numbered over 70, with relatives from all over the country. Everyone enjoyed the gatherings at their Lake Ann home.

She was a woman of tremendous faith, great strength and determination. For years she sang in her church choirs, and has always had a great love of music, which she passed to her children.

She truly was a part of America’s Greatest Generation!

A memorial will be held Saturday, June 3, with 10:30 AM visitation, and service at 11 AM, at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, 701 Westminster Ave., Traverse City, MI 49868.
