Christine Mills, born on August 18, 1957, in Blue Island, Illinois, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 17, 2025, at the age of 67. She lived most of her life in Coldwater, Michigan, and retired in Traverse City, Michigan, in 2018. Christine was a cherished wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who touched the lives of many with her warm heart and generous spirit.
Christine was a gem of a person who appreciated all that life gave her. She married the love of her life, Patrick Mills, on September 15, 1989, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. They met playing intramural volleyball, a sport she cherished in her youth and young adulthood. Christine was the proud mother of two daughters, Taryn Allen and Sarah Woods, and a beloved grandmother to Finn and Isla Allen. She delighted in everything about her role as a grandmother. From snuggling on the couch watching movies to video game competitions and playing cards, her grandchildren brought her endless joy. She truly embodied the adage of a life well lived.
A trailblazer in her family, Christine was the first to attend college. Professionally, she dedicated over 20 years of service to the Branch County Community Health Center, where her colleagues and hospital administration esteemed her for her deep expertise in medical coding and unwavering work ethic. Her career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a desire to make a difference.
Christine's heart was as vast as her capacity to give. Known for her kindness and generosity, she dedicated time to the Human Social Services Department in Coldwater, Michigan, aiding struggling parents by helping them secure essentials for their children. Her kindness knew no bounds, as she also lent her time and love to veterinary care, nurturing her passion for animals.
Christine was an incredible cook, known for her comforting soups, homemade bread, and apple butter. Whether it was a family dinner, a picnic on the boat, cookies or cakes for her grandchildren's events, a dinner party with friends, or a holiday feast, Christine could be counted on to cook something amazing and delicious because it was always prepared not only with her vast skill but also with boundless love.
Offering nourishment and a soothing presence are at the forefront of most memories of Christine. She had an unparalleled ability to listen and provide sage advice. Everyone who knew her felt her sweetness and generosity. For her nurturing spirit, she was affectionately known as "everyone's grandma."
Christine is survived by her devoted husband, Patrick Mills; her daughters, Taryn Allen (Chris Allen) and Sarah Woods (Ben Woods); her siblings, Jackie Kossow (Alan Kossow), Walter Smith, Jr. (Mary Smith), and Cathleen Morrill (John Morrill); and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, Walter Smith, Sr. and Doris (Compton) Smith, and her sister, Cindy Richards, predeceased her.
Christine's battle with cancer was a testament to her strength and resilience, which she displayed until the very end. Memorial donations may be made to The Foundation for Women's Cancer and the Cherryland Humane Society.
Per Christine's wishes, a celebration of life will be held for family and friends later this summer. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and unconditional love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
