In Loving Memory of Dave Schuman

(February 22, 1951 - September 12, 2026)

Dave Schuman's life and impact can't be fully captured in an obituary. He loved life, his friends and family, his patients and nursing colleagues, fun, gardening, Jimmy Buffett, and the outdoors to the fullest. He turned each day into an adventure. He often quoted Buffett songs: “Growing older but not up” and “I’d rather die while I’m living than live while I'm dead," which perfectly described his approach to life. He set a standard for adventure and love that was unique to everyone who knew him. He was the best. He was Fun Dave.

He cherished all the wonderful people he met throughout his life. He shared his love by telling stories (often repeated, to our delight), giving from his garden, and welcoming anyone along for an adventure. His enthusiasm rarely wavered.

He hated creamy peanut butter and ignorance (and honestly, pets). He loved birds and fish, though.

There is an unbearable hole left by his absence. It can only be filled through outdoor adventures. Go kayaking, plant a vegetable, hop on a bike, clip into your skis, hop on a boat with a beer and turn on "One Particular Harbor," walk through the woods, sled down a hill, feel the sun and wind on your cheeks, gaze at the stars, throw on a tropical shirt, and champion those who are special to you.

Dave is survived by his wife, Ann Holmes; his children, Alex, Gretchen, Evan, and Shannon; his grandchildren, Sully, Baxter, and Sawyer; his sisters Alice and Barb; and all of his family and friends. He loved life and all of us.

There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, September 20th, 2026, from 1 to 5 pm, at Johnson Park in Empire. Please wear something colorful and tropical, bring stories to share, and join us in celebrating such a remarkable person.

In lieu of flowers, please plant a vegetable, can some dilly beans, hug those you love, spend time outdoors, and share stories that bring you joy. If those things are not your style, please donate to the Patient Needs Fund at Cowell Family Cancer Center.
