Life Story / Obituary
Debra Lynn “Debbie” Kurtzal, age 68, passed peacefully on November 25, 2025, while bravely working to recover from a stroke at her home in Traverse City, Michigan.
A true trailblazer, Debbie was proud to be among the first class of female AAA insurance agents in the state of Michigan—breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in the industry. Her career was defined by dedication, integrity, and the genuine relationships she formed with her clients.
Debbie was self-driven, competitive, generous, and always ready to share a laugh. Her vibrant personality and strong will made her a force in every aspect of life.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Debbie had a lifelong passion for collecting and treasure hunting. She delighted in rummaging through garage sales and antique stores, enjoying the mystery and history behind each item she discovered. Her love for animals was constant and heartfelt. She cherished her family and friends and never hesitated to reach out, connect, and make others feel welcome.
She is survived by her loving husband, Craig Kurtzal; her children, Kyle Kurtzal and Leah Davenport; her daughter-in-law, Alice Blackmore; her brothers, Jerry Muehling and Walt Muehling; and her beloved grandchildren, Sophia and Hannah. Her legacy lives on through her family and in the many lives she touched.
Debbie will be remembered for the way she made others feel—whether through her delight in simple pleasures like enjoying a glass of white wine with a charcuterie board, the joy she found in uncovering a special treasure, or the perfectly timed one-liner that could turn a good laugh into a great one.
She will be honored for her warmth, curiosity, resilience, and fearless spirit. Debbie lived with purpose and a generous heart, always ready to help those in need. Her family finds comfort in knowing she lived authentically—with strength, humor, and grace to the very end—and that her memory will be carried forward with enduring love and pride.
If you would like to make a tribute to Debbie’s life, a contribution to Save the Elephants (charity) and raising a glass of white wine in her honor would be a remembrance she would have loved.
