Life Story / Obituary

Dennis G. Gray, 86, of Traverse City, MI, passed in his home on February 25th, 2022.

Dennis was a devoted husband and the pillar of his family. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy, his daughter Liz (George), sons David (Carolyn) and Eric (Natalie) and many loving grand children: Kathleen (Ethan), Madeline, Lillian, and Annabelle. As the youngest of 6 siblings, he was an uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Dennis grew up in Detroit, MI where he had a 40+ year career in the auto industry. In 1957-8 he served his country in Korea. After Korea and marriage, he and Nancy raised their children in Plymouth, MI. He coached basketball for his sons David and Eric along with other children.

In retirement, he and Nancy moved to Elk Rapids, MI where they restored their beloved Victorian home. Dennis spent most of his time riding his bike, gardening, reading the newspaper, obsessing over the lawn, and tinkering at his work bench in the garage. He was a life-long Tigers fan and despite moving away from Detroit, remained in touch with neighborhood friends from his childhood, visiting with them well into his 80s whenever he was back in town.

As a follower of the Catholic faith, he attended his church, the Carmelite Monastery of the Infant Jesus of Prague every Sunday. He embodied the traits of loyalty, fairness, and dignity. He will be remembered and missed as an honorable man who was always there to help others.
