DuWayne Francis Couturier, 72, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, December 1, 2021.

He was born June 9, 1949 in Traverse City the son of LeRoy and Margaret Couturier (Stachnik). He grew up in Leelanau County and lived in Traverse City his adult life.

He was a retired carpenter.

Dewey grew up in a baseball family. His father was part of the all Couturier baseball team in Leelanau County. He always told stories about playing ball with his father. When he was 12 years old he pitched a no hitter. Dewey went on to coach the Elmwood hardball team and led them to a Dalton Cup win the last year of the league in 1986.

Dewey loved following local high school sports and was a lifelong Red Wings, Tigers and Packers fan. A couple of his many talents were to read books in a day or two, and convert fractions in mere seconds without hesitation.

He enjoyed going for walks with his dogs, doing projects and building things, doing crossword puzzles, listening to rock and roll and going for rides in Leelanau County. Most of all, Dewey loved spending time with his daughters and their families.

He is survived by his daughters, Janelle (Ryan) Dahlberg and Rhiannon (Matt) Barr; granddaughter, Isla Barr; sister, Diane (Dani) Breithaupt and uncle, Art Stachnik.

He is preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Margaret Couturier and his brother, Gary Couturier.

A Celebration of Life will be held June 10 from 1-6pm at the Cherry Bend Park Pavilion, 10090 E. Lincoln Rd. Traverse City, MI 49684. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society.
