Thela Eileen Hines

Eileen Hines, age 94, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024 at Medilodge of Leelanau.

Eileen was born June 2, 1929 in Whitehall, MI. She was the daughter of Everett A. and Mary (Haws) Shaff. She was raised on the shores of West Bay near the Boardman River with her brother, Don L. Shaff and sister, Ethel. She graduated from Traverse City Public Schools.

On December 31, 1949 Eileen married Walter J. Hines and embarked on a journey of love, dancing and raising a family on Cedar Lake. Eileen worked for several years at Sears, making lifelong friends. She also worked with the 4-H youth.

Walt and Eileen were avid square dancers and polka dancers. They much enjoyed Euchre with the 100 Club at Knights of Columbus, and Louie Sleder’s monthly euchre extravaganza. Memories abound with family and friends at Cedar Lake.

In retirement Walt and Eileen trailered to Las Vegas in winters. She loved her bingo. Family and friends were always welcome.

Hines, Marie E. (Troy) Banton, Rachel C. (Jay) Roman, Ruth M. (Tyler) Phipps, Marleen E. (Joey) Gillespie, Michael W. Hines, Sarah L. (T.J.) Keizer, Annemarie (Samuel) Wigton and Levi P. Meeuwenberg; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents Everett and Mary Shaff, her sister, Ethel; her brother, Don, her husband, Walter and her daughter-in-law, Jann Hines.
