Gordon John Hughes, 66, of Traverse City, died Saturday, October 8, 2022. He was born February 18, 1956, in Muskegon, the son of John and Priscilla (Martz) Hughes.

Gordon was born and raised in Muskegon where he attended Mona Shores High School. He graduated in 1974 and attended the University of Michigan School of Architecture, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1978.

He married his wife Kathy on August 19, 1978. In 1979 they moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked as an architect. During his time in Denver, Gordon found one of his passions and climbed 28 of the 14ers. Gordon and his family moved to Traverse City in 1987 where he began working for Maple Island Log Homes. He then began working at Munson Hospital as a nurse assistant for 10 years before switching and working at Munson Hospitality House for 6 years. Gordon loved helping and serving others.

He also was an Eagle Scout which showed with his love for the outdoors. Gordon enjoyed kayaking and cross country skiing. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church.

Gordon is survived by his wife Kathy; his children, John (Megan) Hughes of Interlochen, Emily (Mike) Emmott of Harbor Springs; his father, John “Jack” Hughes of Muskegon; his siblings, Douglas (Shari) Hughes of Muskegon, Peggy (Harlan) Hutson of Jenks, Oklahoma, Barbara (Kaz) Hughes of Farmington Hills, Teresa Stowers of Muskegon, and Peter (Debbie) Hughes of Muskegon.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Priscilla “Chris” Hughes.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Munson Regional Healthcare Foundation, designate Munson Manor.

Memorial Service will be held 1 pm, Saturday, October 29, 2022 at First Congregational Church in Traverse City.
