Life Story / Obituary

Heidi Sue (Schmidt) Sych was peacefully ushered into heaven on Monday, April 6, 2026. She was at home in her safe space, held close by her husband and rock, John. Born in Saginaw, MI on May 17, 1957 to Fred and Eunice Schmidt, Heidi spent many cherished years in Frankenmuth before making her home in Traverse City.

Heidi will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and warmth she brought to everyone around her. She had an uncanny ability to find joy in both the simple and meaningful moments – cheering on her Spartans through every high and low, though she'd be the first to remind you that sometimes "it's not easy being green." She loved watching sunsets over Grand Traverse Bay, finding new adventures with John, cooking delicious meals, and creating memories that will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Even through life’s deepest valleys, Heidi leaned on her faith in Jesus – drawing strength and hope from it and never being shy about sharing it with others. Her life was not without hardship. She endured profound losses and faced more obstacles and health challenges than most could imagine, yet she met each one with resilience, hope, and an unmistakable spark that defined who she was.

She loved deeply and wholeheartedly, especially cherishing her three boys – Chris, Dan, and Tom. She was immensely proud of their military service and of the men they each became, honoring and appreciating what made each of them uniquely who they were. Her legacy lives on in the stories shared, the love she gave, and the mark she left on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Heidi is survived by her loving husband, John Sych; son Chris (Gwen) Weber; step son Conor Sych; daughter-in-law Anne Romatz; granddaughter Savannah Weber-Russell; brothers Jim (Carol) Schmidt, Fred/FJ Schmidt, and Steve Schmidt; sisters Anne (Tim) Francisco and Jenni (Tom) Dexter; sister-in-law Jan Schmidt; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her deeply in return. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Eunice Schmidt; sons Tom and Dan Weber; daughter-in-law Kimmie Weber; brother Tom Schmidt; nephews Matthew Francisco, Andy Schmidt, and Joshua Francisco.

A celebration of Heidi's beautiful life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Life Story Funeral Home at 400 West Hammond Road, Traverse City, Michigan. Visitation will be from 12–2 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service. A time of food and fellowship will follow from 3–6 PM at the Top of the Park at the Park Place Hotel, 300 East State Street, Traverse City, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those planning an expression of sympathy consider a donation in Heidi’s memory to Kidney Companions of Traverse City.
