Howard Schievenin

Howard John Schievenin, 69, of Traverse City, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026 surrounded by family.

Howard was born on August 15, 1956, in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, to the late Richard John Schievenin and Marion Louise (Field) Schievenin. Though he never married and had no children of his own, he was deeply loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Laura (Schievenin) Banks, and her husband, Robert Banks; his nieces, Brittany Banks, and Jessica (Banks) Johnston and her husband, Mike Johnston; and his great-nieces, Nora and Avery.

In 1981, Howard founded Woodcraft Custom Built Homes. He became a highly respected contractor in Traverse City, building a career that would span decades and positively impact countless families and businesses. It seemed that wherever you went, someone had a story about a project he helped complete, advice he willingly shared, or a hand he extended when it was needed. Howard believed that how you treated people mattered just as much as the work you produced, and he built lifelong friendships and genuine relationships with those he worked with. Those who knew Howard will remember a man whose actions were guided by honesty and an unwavering sense of responsibility.

Howard embraced the Northern Michigan lifestyle he loved so much. He spent countless hours hiking, kayaking, skiing, and swimming, and found peace and happiness when he was outdoors. Arbutus Lake held a special place in his heart, particularly the quiet moments listening to the loons from his deck. An enthusiastic foodie, he never met a dessert he didn't like and rarely turned down an invitation to breakfast. He valued time spent around a table, sharing stories and laughing with those he cared about most. Howard adored animals, especially dogs, and those who loved him take comfort in believing he is now reunited with the many loyal companions who brought him joy throughout his life.

Howard will be remembered for his love for life, his craftsmanship, and his genuine care for others. Howard's impact reached far beyond the homes he built. It lives on in the friendships he forged, the lives he touched, and the countless cold beers shared after a day well spent. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
