Life Story / Obituary
Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Janet Miriam Wallace, passed away peacefully at Bay Ridge of Traverse City, Michigan on October 8, 2012. Janet , was 92 years old. We thank Bay Ridge for their great friendships from staff and residents. They were a tremendous community and we appreciate them so much.
She was an avid reader, who read all manner of books with great delight. She was a wealth of knowledge with a memory to match. She enjoyed nothing better than holding deep, meaningful conversations with new and old acquaintances. She had a special writing group with dear friends.
Janet enjoyed the Quaker Church and trusted in the unconditional love of God. She was preceded in death by her father, Durnell E. Matthews, mother, Grace Conner Matthews and sisters, Jeanne Jeffreys and Joy Ryan Kilcherman. Her brother, Ian Matthews, lives in Australia. She has four children, David Matthews Wallace, Mary Joy( Joseph) Chamie, Elizabeth Jeanne(Russell )Rose and Sarah Sue Robinson.
She has grandchildren David, Ramona, Douglas and Jamie, Rima, Gabriel, Ramsey, Rachel, Verne, Joshua and Katie and 17 great-grandchildren and counting. She cherished her mother-in-law Blanche Wallace Gunn.
Janet had a remarkable, crystal clear, never-to-be- forgotten, Welsh, soprano singing voice, comparable to none. “Oh Holy Night,” and “The Messiah,” were a few of her treasures.
Mother loved the color and the hues of nature. She was an avid tree planter. Thousands of trees in Michigan are her testimonies to this fact.
Janet was married to Floyd Daniel Wallace, of Leslie, Michigan, for 32 years.
Our best family memories together were at Torch Lake, Michigan, swimming, fishing and singing at night around the campfire at our little cabin. Thank you Mom and Dad for those memories. Her favorite poem was, “High Flight,” and now she has “reached out and touched the face of God. “
Until we meet again, Mom, we thank you for the journey.
Memorial services will be held 2pm, Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Traverse City Friends of the Light Quaker Church, 206 Oak Street and 5th Street. The family will greet friends starting at 1pm.
