Life Story / Obituary
Jean Mavis Emmons, 92, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 in Traverse City.
She was born April 19, 1920 in Elsie the daughter of Ernest and Mabel (Tillsotson) Tompkins in Elsie, Michigan.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Susan (Lauren) Rinehart of Maple City and son, William (Sharon) Carver of Clarksville, grandchildren; John (Tammy) Carver Jr., William (Kathleen) Carver Jr., Bruce (Brenda) Carver; great-grandchildren, John, Elise, Blair, Megan and Jack, great-great-grandson, Lucas, step-daughter, Linda (Donald) Klingersmith of Holt, brother, William (Betty) Tompkins of Beulah, nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Barbara Tompkins of Traverse City.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Tyrus Emmons, son and daughter-in-law, John Sr. and Elise Carver, grandson, Christopher Carver and brother, Richard Tompkins;
Jean co-owned the Emmons Grocery Store with her husband Tyrus in Lake Ann from 1960-1978.
She enjoyed playing cards, volunteering, fishing, traveling, crocheting, quilting and was known to have a thousand piece jig saw puzzles always in the works.
Jean started volunteering with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the United Way of NW MI Volunteer Center in 1999. She also volunteered at the Dulcimer's Fun Festival in Evart. Jean loved the Afghan Angel program. She was a charter member and crocheted afghans for seniors. She would take left-over yarn and piece it together to make works of art. Jean was a community volunteer always finding time to help others except on card days at the Senior Center.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Services will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday September 4, 2012 at the Life Story Funeral home ,Traverse City. The family will greet friends starting at 1:00pm.
