Joan Stewart

May 30, 1931 – July 22, 2019

Joan was born to Gordon McNab and Ann (Robertson) McNab in Detroit, and lived all but the last five years of her life within a few miles of her childhood home. Joan and her (late) husband, Jim, spent their last 30 years together in Royal Oak, where they enjoyed the friendships of many wonderful neighbors. After Jim’s passing, Joan spent her last five and a half years with her daughter and son-in-law in Traverse City.

Joan was known as a loyal friend who would do anything to help someone. She volunteered extensively in various ministries in her church, including the nursery, Vacation Bible Schools, the food pantry, warming centers, and her women’s group. Over the years, her cheesecakes and lasagnas graced many church potlucks and the church choir enjoyed annual cookouts at the home she and Jim shared. Anyone who knew Joan likely enjoyed her cooking and hospitality at one time or another!

Joan loved her pets. Dogs, cats, and birds were always a part of the family. Her last pets included Holly (cockapoo), Dora (cocker spaniel), Buddy (cockatiel) and Buddy (parakeet). She also loved flowers, butterflies, and outdoor birds. Over the years, she accumulated a collection of ceramic birds, several of which accompanied her to the nursing home to brighten her room to the very end.

Over the years, Joan enjoyed a variety of hobbies. Some of these were oil painting, arranging dried flowers, making glass terrariums and tending to the multitude of plants and flowers that adorned her yard and deck. She also enjoyed listening to music, in particular, Jim’s piano playing and her brother, Gordon’s, harmonica playing.

Joan is survived by her children, Alan Stewart, Linda Hasbrouck, and Dale Stewart, as well as her daughter-in-law Judy Stewart, son-in-law Fitch Hasbrouck and grandchildren, Kristen VanDenBerg, Stephanie Hasbrouck and Marissa Stewart. She is also survived by her brother, Gordon McNab.

Joan will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many.
