John Bruce Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 10, 2025 at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City.

John was a dedicated and loving husband to his wife of 73 years, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Born on Nov. 13, 1927 to Elvia and Laurita Miller in Batavia, NY, he was the oldest of six children. John grew up in Buffalo, and joined the United States Army after high school.

He served honorably in post-war Germany. John married Mary (Kokolus) Miller in August, 1951, and was soon living in army barracks again, also known as married housing, at Michigan State University. He graduated from MSU with a degree in civil engineering in 1955 and went to work for the United States Geological Survey until his retirement in 1987.

John and Mary raised their three children in Haslett, MI, until they moved to Traverse City in 2023 to be closer to family. John believed in education and supported his children and grandchildren in their college education.

He was a skilled bridge player and accomplished bowler who also enjoyed golf and supporting his beloved MSU Spartans. He was a life-member of the American Legion, and a member of the Lansing Host Lions Club.

John is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Rebecca (Brian) McGillivary; sons Michael (Cindy) Miller and Mark (Jennifer) Miller, all of Traverse City, and seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at Life Story Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday, June 7. A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. with a service beginning at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Disabled American Veterans or a charity of your choosing. Please visit www.lifestorytc.com to share your thoughts and more.
