John Francis Tobin, 91, of Traverse City, formerly of Honor, died Sunday, May 2, 2021.

He was born March 24, 1930 to Harold and Shirley (Denny) Tobin on South Manitou Island.

John was in the Coast Guard. He returned back to Leelanau County and worked at the Empire Air Force Base in Central Heating for 38 years before retiring.

John married Dorothy Marie Martell on January 15, 1949. John and Dorothy were members at St. Philip Neri Church in Empire.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and carving wood birds.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Judy (Leonard) Emert; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and sister, Norma Marmie.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Perry; son, John Tobin; grandson, Clint Emert; and siblings, Donald and Loretta Tobin.

Memorials may be made in John’s memory to the National Park Service for the Lighthouse on South Manitou Island.

A brief military honor service will be held 3:30 pm, Friday, May 14, 2021 at Life Story Funeral Home. An informal gathering will continue until 5 pm with the family. Masks are required at all times with social distancing. Please say hello to the family and allow others to come into the building.
