Jon Benn

Jon Paul Benn, 74, passed away on August 29, 2026 at his home in Traverse City, Michigan surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on February 17, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan.

Jon graduated from Garden City West High School and went on to play football at Michigan Technological University for two years. After that he became a mechanic, then went into the insurance industry where he remained until his death.

He met his spouse, Shirley Jean (Schifle) in 1975 and they married in 1978. Together they enjoyed gardening, hiking, and camping. Jon was an avid fisherman and when able, spent all his free time fishing on the local lakes.

Jon is survived by his wife Shirley, his daughter Evelynn Jean Benn Behm (Joseph), his son Josiah Franklin Benn (Erica), six grandchildren, Havana Benn, Waylon Benn, Luella Benn, Lily Behm, Wyatt Behm, and Lukas Behm. His stepsisters Deborah Kay Schifle Razelun (John) and Sally Lynn Schifle, nieces and nephews Amanda Jorgensen, Jimmy Jorgensen, Jamie Jorgensen, and Parker Razelun. He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis John Benn and Evalein Barbara Duvall and his nephew John Lee Razelun.

A private celebration of life will be held in the spring around Jon’s favorite holiday, “The opening of Walleye Season.”
