Joseph “Joe” Gies, 70, of Mesick, Michigan, died Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at home. He was born November 29, 1955, in Bay City, Michigan, to James Charles and Viola (Summerville) Gies.

Joe honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1973 to 1974. He married Karen Sue Krawczynski on September 23, 1978, in Harrison, Michigan.

Joe was a heavy equipment operator, restored and repaired antique furniture. He worked for the DNR on the USS Steelhead boat conducting fish research. Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing. His most memorable fishing trips were to the Two Hearted River in the Upper Peninsula with his buddies.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Karen (Krawczynski) Gies; brother, James (Sayegh) Gies of Florida; and sisters, Judy Hales of Iowa, and Janet (Bobbie) Wilson of Tennessee; five nieces; two nephews; nine-great nephews and nieces, several in-laws, and his two four-legged kids Mersadie and Zip.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Viola; grandparents; an infant son, David Joseph Edward Gies and nephew, Matthew Gies.
