In Loving Memory of Joseph Russell Havens (8/30/1980-9/07/2025)

Celebrating the Life of a Young Adventurer, Devoted Partner, and Kind Friend

It is with profound sadness and gentle remembrance that we announce the passing of Joseph, a remarkable young man whose spirit soared as high as the mountains he loved to climb and whose heart was as open and generous as the boundless sky. To know Jo was to know warmth, laughter, and an ever-present invitation to step outside and experience the world in all its wild beauty. His life, though brief, was full, a tapestry woven with adventure, love, and an enduring kindness that touched family, friends, and strangers alike.

A Life Defined by Adventure

From his earliest days, growing up in Michigan, Joe was captivated by the natural world. Always with his friends ready for the next adventure, he grew up hiking forest trails, camping under a canopy of stars, and paddling the winding rivers that cut through the countryside. The outdoors was more than a backdrop for Joe—it was his sanctuary, his classroom, and often, his source of inspiration. He cherished each sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset over the lake, every summit conquered alongside friends and family, and the quiet moments spent listening to the wind move through the trees.

As he matured, Joe’s passion for adventure only grew. He became an avid backpacker, mountain biker, and kayaker, always eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. He organized group treks and weekend excursions, welcoming novices and seasoned explorers alike. To Joe, nature was a gift to be shared, and he did so with joy, patience, and infectious excitement. His stories of wilderness escapades—sometimes humorous, always heartfelt—would light up any gathering, painting vivid pictures of landscapes and laughter.

Devoted Husband and Partner

Joe was not only an adventurer but a loving husband. He met his soulmate Carla when he was on a job in Alaska, which began their adventures hiking, camping, and exploring together from that day forward. Together, they traveled winding roads, scaled peaks, all over the counrty, and found solace in each other's company. Their marriage was one of mutual support, respect, and unyielding affection—a partnership that thrived both in moments of great joy and in times of adversity.

The love Joe shared with Carla was evident to all who knew them. Whether planning a spontaneous weekend camping trip or simply enjoying a quiet evening at the cabin, Joe brough humor and a deep friendship to their relationship. Their connection was a living testament to the power of shared adventure and unconditional love.

Family Bonds

Joe was a beloved son, brother, and uncle to his two nieces, whose loyalty to family ran deep. Joe had a very tight bond with his aunts and uncles on both his mother and father’s sides of the family. Joe's commitment to family extended beyond his immediate circle which included his closet friends he considered his family and to all the boys during his employment at Boy’s Home in Covington Virginia

Friendship and Community

Joe’s circle of friends was as diverse and colorful as the landscapes he adored. He was a connector—bringing people together, camping trips, or a group expedition. His ability to listen, encourage, and bring out the best in others made him a treasured companion. Friends recount his unfailing optimism, his spontaneous sense of humor, and his knack for transforming even the most ordinary day into an adventure.

Celebration of Life

Joe’s family invites all to gather for a Celebration of Life, where stories, laughter, and music will fill the air— Saturday October 4th at 12pm Camp Carvela 33 Bass Lake Rd Traverse City Michigan 49685

Final Farewell

As we say goodbye to Joe, we remember a life lived with boldness and grace. His footsteps will be found along the beach shores and along wooded trails, reminding us to greet each day with gratitude and curiosity. May his memory be a blessing, and may his spirit continue to inspire us to explore, to love, and to protect the world around us.
