Life Story / Obituary
Larry Michael Waugh, 74, of Cedar passed away on Wednesday November 6th 2013.
Mike was born on March 17th, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. The son of the late Hugh and Hazel (Hasse) Waugh. He graduated high school with honors at age 17. He completed two years of college at Wesleyan University of Ohio, before joining the Army. Mike served 2 years in the Army predominantly stationed in Germany with the great Elvis Presley, which made for some great stories over the years. Mike returned to Michigan after the service and ended up teaching Mortgage Finance and Banking at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
Mike decided in 1990, after years spent working in mortgage banking and real estate finance, that it was time to slow down. He moved the family north, up to Traverse City, MI. from Chicago, Il. to escape the crowds and chaos of city life and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Northern Michigan. He was the President of the Sugar Loaf service company in Leelanau County when he passed away.
Mike loved the solitude and pristine beauty of Northern Michigan, especially Leelanau County. He was passionate about Skiing and Golf and spent many years teaching skiing to both young and old. He was grateful to have the opportunity to pass on his passion for skiing to others. He is renowned across Northern Michigan for always skiing with his cowboy hat on, no matter how cold it got!
He is survived by his loving wife Sharon (Smith) Waugh with whom he was married to on July 25th, 1964 in Detroit, MI. and his children Adam Waugh and Heidi Kistler Waugh, and his grandchildren Tylor and Hannah Kistler.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial/celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to his wife Sharon Waugh, to help with expenses.
