Elk Rapids- Marjorie Anita Kinery passed away peacefully in her Elk Rapids home Sunday October 29, 2017. Marjorie was the only child of Benjamin and Amalia (Hornung) Stumpmeyer, born August 21, 1929 in Monroe Michigan.

Marge was raised on the family farm in Monroe surrounded by her extended Stumpmeyer family. After graduating from Monroe High School at the age of 16, Marge worked as a secretary. She married Charles R. Kinery in January of 1949. The pair moved to Chicago where Chuck attended drafting school and Marge worked as a switchboard operator. In 1950, they moved to Dearborn, Michigan where they would spend the next 18 years. In Dearborn, the Kinerys were members of Atonement Lutheran Church & School where Marjorie taught kindergarten.

The Kinerys, with their six children, moved to Elk Rapids in 1967 to their home across from Grand Traverse Bay. Marge was devoted to historical studies. She found particular interest in the history of northern Michigan and the life of Abram Wadsworth, the founder of Elk Rapids. She was instrumental in deeming August 13th as Abram Wadsworth Day and helped to found the Elk Rapids Historical Society. Marjorie was also a life member of the Monroe Historical Society, the Grand Traverse Area Historical Society, and served as president of the Antrim County Historical Society for several years. In 2005, Marjorie was named Historian of the Year by the Grand Traverse Pioneer & Historical Society. She was also a recipient of the Michigan Minuteman Award for her historical volunteer work.

Marjorie lived her life as a devoted Lutheran as well as a vocal member of the pro-life movement and supporter of community mental health, serving many years as a member of the Antrim County Mental Health Board. Marge was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Elk Rapids for the past 50 years.
