Nicholas William Gunter, 38, of Traverse City, died August 9, 2021. He was born on May 29, 1983, the son of Ricky and Laura Gunter. He grew up in Traverse City as a happy and caring boy.

After graduating high school, he joined the US Army. Once he completed basic training, he was deployed to the war in Iraq. He was attached to the 1st Division 125th Infantry. Nicholas's company was known as the Hooligans. Their job was to patrol and defend a village.

He was a Gunner and on a routine patrol, the vehicle was blown up by a homemade bomb. He suffered a serious injury that would stay with him throughout his entire life. He spent 8 months rehabilitating in Walter Reed Hospital. Living with that injury and having to adjust to living, it would unfortunately always be a reminder of what he had to do as a soldier. He received several military citations and a purple heart. He battled with PTSD.

Nicholas loved to hunt for rocks and make jewelry out of them. After trying to cope with his condition he just couldn't overcome it. Unfortunately the demons he was battling were too much for him. The world lost his kind and gentle soul. He will be missed.
