Patty Lou Caswell, 92, of Traverse City, formerly of Kewadin, Rockford, and Northville, died Monday, July 8, 2024 in the comfort of her home in Traverse City, at Bay Ridge Assisted Living Center.

She was born on March 17, 1932, in Holland, Mich., the daughter of Albert and Janet (Vandenberg) Van Lopik.

Patty’s family lived in Holland, Mich., and she graduated from Holland High School in 1949. She attended Western Michigan University, and while in her first year there she was introduced to the love of her life, John Armand “Army” Caswell, through his sister Janeen. The two eloped and were married on August 12, 1950 in Angola, Indiana.

Patty worked as an executive secretary and then was a homemaker.

She was an avid golfer and supporter of the Detroit Tigers. Her raspberry pies were renowned and her beautifully hand-crafted, knit baby blankets are cherished by many of her great-grandchildren and others who’ve been blessed by her handiwork. In recent years, Patty could be found enjoying bingo and bus trips to Moomers.

Patty and her husband were members of the Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville for over 20 years, then the Silver Lake Country Club in Rockford and Errol Estates Country Club in Apopka, FL. When they moved to Kewadin in 2000, they joined A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.

Patty is survived by her children, Sandy (Bob) Foote of Traverse City; Candace Caswell of Canby, Cal., and Tom Caswell of Kalkaska; grandchildren, Heidi, Stephanie, Bret, Stacy, Kyrie, Janet, Kylene, Caroline and Kelsey; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Army; son, Randy Caswell; brother, Stanley Van Lopik and sister, Joyce Russell.

Patty’s family would like to thank Bay Ridge Assisted Living Center and Hospice of Michigan for the outstanding, compassionate, and loving care they provided Patty.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan, Traverse City at hom.org
