Richard Donald Amenson, 84, of Interlochen, died, Friday, June 12, 2026. He was born on July 22, 1941 in Detroit the son of Richard Elmer and Esther Gertrude (Bleich) Amenson.
Richard left high school early to join the United States Navy. After his military release he came back to Brighton and later moved to Interlochen.
He worked in the Oil Field in Michigan before he moved to Destin, Florida. He and Sandy Managed the Nautical Inn Motel in Destin, where they bought their sailboat "The Kid". He later worked as the Maintenance Supervisor at Sun Destin Condominiums. In 1996 his wife, Sandy, and he moved back to Interlochen. There he was in Maintenance for a time at the Turtle Creek Casino. He later became the Maintenance Supervisor at the Village of Bay Ridge Retirement Community before his own retirement.
Richard loved being on the water and sailing in Florida on his Sailboat. He most enjoyed The Other Bar that he built for family and friends to gather. Bringing people together was his greatest gift.
He was a member of the Destin Fraternal Order of Elks of which he was a charter member, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Interlochen; where he was a Past President.
Richard is survived by his wife, Sandra (Griffin) Amenson; children, Jason (Jodi) Gillard and Justin (Teresa) Amenson; siblings, Dorothy Williams, Craig (Jackie) Amenson and Don Amenson as well as many nephews, nieces and others too numerous to list.
He was preceded by in death by his parents, Richard and Esther and brother, Bob Amenson.
A Celebration of Life will take place from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Saturday, August 15, 2026 at the Interlochen Fraternal Order of Eagles. A Military Honors ceremony will start at 2:30 pm with a luncheon to follow.
