Richard Joseph Schaub, 86, of Traverse City passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Richard was born on February 17, 1933, in Centerville Township, the son of Lawrence John and Louise (Brow) Schaub. He graduated from St. Mary’s School in Lake Leelanau. He was recently recognized for being a member of the Lake Leelanau St. Mary School 1950 Regional Championship basketball team.

As a young man, Richard served his nation in the United States Army at the same time as two of his brothers, Alfred and Donald.

Richard was in construction for over 40 years, belonging to Local 202 Carpenters Union. He was also active in sports, including basketball, baseball, and bowling. Richard enjoyed hunting, passing this tradition on to many of his children.

Richard is survived by his wife, Ann Louise (Olson) Schaub. Richard married his loving wife of 62 years on October 13, 1956. They had eight children: Duane (Cheryl) Schaub, Howard (Ann-Marie) Schaub, Ken (Heidi) Schaub, Laurie Schaub-D’Aquila, Rebecca (Joseph) Fohey, Mary Maison, Ann Garrett, and Jennifer (Mark) Schaub-Donkers. His family also includes 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Richard was the fifth of eleven children: Helen McGarry, Marie Couturier, Ruth Ash, Alfred Schaub, Donald Schaub, Harold Schaub, Elaine Hoover, Jean Laurich, Robert Schaub, and Donna Hoogeboom.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at 11 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3801 Shore Rd, Williamsburg, MI 49690. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass, beginning at 10 am at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 and the United States Army. At Richard’s request, please consider a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Traverse City Chapter.

Richard wanted to ensure that the nurses and medical staff at Munson Hospital knew he appreciated the excellent care he received.
