Walter Appleberg

Walter Andrew Appleberg Jr., 80, of Traverse City, died Saturday, October 24, 2020.

He was born November 2, 1939 to Walter Andrew and Esther Augusta (Kortman) Appleberg in Oqueoc, Michigan. He had 5 brothers and sisters and a half brother.

Walter served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1960.

Walter was a power lineman for contractors through I.B.E.W. Local 17 and received his 55 year member award this summer. He was highly respected and a mentor for many in the industry. He retired in January 2001 and moved to Traverse City to live out his retirement in his home in the woods.

Walter was an avid outdoorsman who loved being in nature, enjoyed all forms of wildlife, birdwatching, and gardening. He was a deer hunter and enjoyed fishing on his small lake.

He was a talented woodworker who crafted many items for his home. He enjoyed being busy working around his home and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends with whatever was needed.

Walter loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.

Walter is survived by his wife, Diane (Ferguson) Appleberg; they were married on June 20, 1964; children, Michael (Sue) Appleberg, John (Kelli) Appleberg, and Kerri (Doug) Copeland; grandchildren; Christopher, Ariel, Isaac, Andrew, Jacob, Matthew, Mariah, Keagan, Zachary, Avery, Joshua, Karstyn, and Kynleigh; step-grandchildren; Kelly, Kim, Ella and Michael as well as several great grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by his son, Walter Andrew (Michelle) Appleberg III; triplet grandchildren (Daniel, Leah, & Chad Appleberg); his brother Robert and sister Lillian.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Grand Traverse Land Conservancy; American Red Cross or charity of one's choice.

Funeral Services will be held 1pm, Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends starting at 12 noon.
